Northern Ireland shielding ‘paused’ as West Belfast family make appeal to keep vulnerable safe

Nervousness rather than excitement will be the overriding emotion for the family of Dáithí Mac Gabhann as shielding is officially paused for an estimated 80,000 people in Northern Ireland today. The three-year-old and his parents Máirtín and Seph have spent the last four months shielding from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic because Dáithí’s heart condition places him in the most vulnerable category. The West Belfast tot, who is waiting on a heart transplant, was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means that Dáithí was born with half a working heart with the left side not forming correctly in the womb.
